In February 2003, GPL is getting a bit hard to find, but Sold-Out Software in the UK still has some copies and is charging only £4.99. Also try eBay.
As of late 2000, GPL was no longer available on Sierra's Web site or at Dragon.ca. Some people found copies in local stores such as Office Depot and Fry's, but others have had difficulty finding a copy locally or on the Internet.
I have learned of several mail order sources, and a German magazine will also be publishing GPL in an upcoming issue.
A UK reader named "Jays" writes:
The Sierra UK Online Shop still has GPL.
I can also confirm software first still have it in stock. I just replaced my second hand copy with a new one from them.
I might have found a site selling the editor's choice collection with the Rendition CART version. The site lists it as available, http://store.yahoo.com/a-plussoftware/
I have sent an email to confirm they have it. If they do I am just hoping soooo bad they will send it to New Zealand and not just do North American orders. I'll let you know if it comes through anyway so you can update the links.
A local software retailer in Massachusetts has told me they would be willing to do mail order as long as GPL is available through their distributor.
Marty Davis ordered a copy through Best Buy. The packing showed that it was shipped by a company called Software Plus.
A British retailer, Software First, ships GPL worldwide, for a quite reasonable price. Shipping costs are very reasonable, too. Go here.
Update, 2/8/01 - Unfortunately, MSB now appear to have sold out of both CARTand GPL.
A retailer in Avon, Ohio, Most Significant Bits, Inc., sells both GPL and CART. Tyler Van Spanje says, "They still have copies of PC Gamer Editors' Choice Collection which includes the Rendition version of CART Racing. They still list it for $14.95 and they list GPL for $14.95."
Andy Kauffman says, "I purchased [GPL] from www.nothingbutsoftware.com for $14.95 (USD). Just FYI, it was item # 19602.
"Man...this game is a blast :)"
GPL is shown as available for £9.44 + p&p in the UK at Jungle.com. They also ship internationally. Go to the Games section and search on Grand Prix Legends.
Another source for GPL is the
German magazine PC Action. The February 2001 issue of PC
Action includes a full version of GPL on the cover CD ROM.
GPL only sold about 40,000 copies. Word is that PC Action
sells about 120,000 copies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland,
instantly tripling the number of copies of GPL in circulation!
Thanks to Michael for this tip.
Try Office Depot, Fry's, assorted online gaming supply houses, and auctions such as eBay, Amazon.com, and Excite.
A Canadian mail order house, Dragon. They currently do not list GPL, but the former page was here. Perhaps they will start carrying it again, who knows?
GPL's original publisher was Sierra, and until late 2000 it was available on their Web site. For reference, the GPL page was here. Maybe Sierra will eventually publish a "classic" version. They've already done that once, but this time perhaps they could configure it with the 1.2 patch and the disco fix applied, and with the Direct3D and OpenGL rasterizers included. This seems unlikely, but we can always hope!
