Supporting Software: pack/unpack and pkunzip ----------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Introduction These instructions explain how to install the 3D Track Kit developed by Robert Camp for the Rendition-ready version of Papyrus IndyCar Racing 2 (informally known as ICR2/3D). The 3D Track Kit provides 3D enhancements for the non-enhanced tracks originally supplied with ICR2/3D. These enhancements are similar to the 3D enhancements found in the five HQ tracks originally supplied with ICR2/3D. You must already own ICR2/3D. The 3D Kit does not contain the original tracks. Due to copyright laws protecting the original tracks, the Kit contains only enhancements to these tracks, along with installation tools which allow you to easily combine them with your original tracks to produce the enhanced versions. The authors assume no responsibility for any difficulties that may arise from the use of this software. This software is provided as is, free of charge for private use. It may be freely redistributed only in its entirety. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Installation Location These installation instructions assume you have the Rendition-ready version of ICR2 installed in \icr2. If you used a different installation directory, substitute its path for \icr2 in the following instructions. You will need to provide this path in a command line parameter the first time you run the install utility. See Quick Start, below, for details. The INSTALL batch file assumes you have placed the 3D Track Kit zip archives in a directory in your ICR2 directory called 3dkits. If you put them somewhere else, you will need to provide this path in a command line parameter the first time you run the install utility. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Requirements You must have a full install of ICR2/Rendition installed on your hard drive. You must have approximately 50 mb free on your hard drive to install all of the enhanced tracks. You must have adequate environment space allocated for DOS programs (1024 is recommended). See the Appendix for how to adjust this. You must have pkunzip.exe installed in a directory in your PATH. You must have pack.exe and unpack.exe installed in your ICR2 directory (i.e. \icr2). See the Appendix for information on where to obtain these programs. The 3D Track Kit must be on the same device as your ICR2 directory, and its INSTALL utility must be run from that device. In other words, you cannot run INSTALL from D: if ICR2 is in C:\ICR2. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Quick Start If you run it without any command line parameters, this install utility runs in interactive mode. This is the simplest way to use it. To install the 3D tracks for ICR2/Rendition, do the following: 1. Create a subdirectory in your ICR2 directory called 3dkits and place the 3D Track Kits there. 2. Unzip the Track Kit installation zip file c: cd \icr2\3dkits setup 3. Run the installation batch file that was extracted from the zip file: install If you installed ICR2 in a directory other than \icr2, you must use a /d flag and specify this path on the command line. For example, if you installed ICR2 in \games\icr2, run it this way instead: install /d \games\icr2 4. Now select Option 1 on the Main Menu. The install utility will install all your new 3D tracks. If you wish to install only selected new 3D tracks, select Option 2 instead. Note: If you choose to install all of the new 3D tracks, once the installation is complete, you will be given a choice of removing the directories containing the old tracks, or moving them to another directory. If you choose to install only some of the new 3D tracks, you can choose Option 3 on the Main Menu to move or delete their corresponding old tracks. Moving or deleting the old tracks is necessary due to a limitation of ICR2. If you will be racing with other people via modem or null modem, and they do not have the new 3D tracks, you should choose to move the old tracks to another directory. See "Number of Tracks: ICR2 Limitation" below for details. Now you can run ICR2/Rendition and the new 3D tracks will appear in the ICR2 track listing. For example, the 3D Vancouver track will appear as "VANCOUVER NEW" in your track listing. Note regarding the /d parameter: once you use this parameter, the installation utility remembers the location you specified, so you do not need to specify it again if you run the install utility again later. Once you have installed all the 3D track kits you want, you may delete the 3dkits directory and its contents. They are not used by ICR2 when it runs; they are only used to build the new tracks. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 5. Number of Tracks: ICR2 Limitation ICR2 has a limit of 24 tracks. If you have all of the original 2D and 3D ICR2/Rendition tracks, and add all of the new 3D tracks, ICR2 will not be able to load them all, and will refuse to run. You will need to move some of the original tracks to a different directory, or else delete them. The INSTALL batch file allows you to do this when you install all the tracks. If you choose not to move or delete the the tracks when you first run INSTALL, you can run it later with the "clean" parameter to only move or delete the old tracks: install clean Alternatively, in Windows, create a new directory, such as c:\icr2\tracks2d, and drag the old track directories to this new directory. Note that you may wish to keep the old tracks in case you want to modem race with someone who does not have the new 3D tracks. In that case, simply rename the tracks directory to tracks3d, and rename the tracks2d directory to tracks. Now, when you run ICR2, you will see only the old tracks. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 6. NASCAR1 and ICR1 Tracks The 3D Track Kit includes 3D enhancements for the ICR1 Indianapolis track conversion and the NASCAR1 Watkins Glen and Sears Point conversions. Due to copyright law, we cannot provide the complete original versions for any Papyrus tracks. If you already have Indy, the Glen, or Sears, the 3D Track Kit will install its enhancements to them. If not, it will bypass these enhancements. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Appendix ----------------------------------------------------------------- A1. Environment Space If you get a message reading "Out of Environment Space" when you run the installer, you need to increase the environment space that is allocated for DOS programs. If you are running the installer in a Windows 95 MS-DOS Prompt, (i.e you selected "Start" from the Start Menu, then "Programs" and then "MS-DOS Prompt"), then do this: 1. Open the MS-DOS Prompt window. 2. Click on the Properties icon at the top of the MS-DOS Prompt window (the icon with the little finger pointing to a screen). 3. Click on the Memory tab. 4. Set Initial Environment to 1024. 5. Click OK. Click OK in the popup box. 6. Close and reopen the MS-DOS Prompt. If you are running the installer in Windows 95 MS-DOS Mode, which you entered through the Start Menu (i.e. you selected "Start", then "Shut Down" and then "Restart the computer in MS-DOS Mode"), do this: 1. Edit your config.sys and insert a line like this: shell=c:\windows\command.com c:\windows /e:1024 /p The above example assumes you have Windows 95 installed in c:\windows. If you have it installed elsewhere, modify both paths accordingly. For example, if you have Windows 95 installed in c:\win95: shell=c:\win95\command.com c:\win95 /e:1024 /p 2. Reboot your system and re-enter MS-DOS Mode through the Start Menu. If you are running the installer in DOS, do this: 1. Edit your config.sys and insert a line like this: shell=command.com /e:1024 /p If you do not have command.com in the root directory on drive c:, specify the drive and path that points to the location of your command.com. For example, if you have DOS installed in c:\dos: shell=c:\dos\command.com /e:1024 /p 2. Reboot your system. ----------------------------------------------------------------- A2. Installing All the 3D Tracks - Command Line Mode To install these 3D tracks for ICR2/Rendition, do the following: 1. Create a subdirectory in your ICR2 directory called 3dkits and place the 3D Track Kits there. 2. Unzip the Track Kit installation zip file c: cd \icr2\3dkits setup 3. Run the installation batch file that was extracted from the zip file: install /a If you installed ICR2 in a directory other than \icr2, you must use a /d flag and specify this path on the command line. For example, if you installed ICR2 in \games\icr2, run it this way instead: install /d \games\icr2 /a Note: Once the new 3D tracks are installed, you will be given a choice of removing the directories containing the old tracks, or moving them to another directory. This is necessary due to a limitation of ICR2. If you will be racing with other people via modem or null modem, and they do not have the new 3D tracks, you should choose to move the old tracks to another directory. See below for details. Now you can run ICR2/Rendition and the new tracks will appear in the ICR2 track listing. For example, the 3D Vancouver track will appear as "VANCOUVER NEW" in your track listing. Note regarding the /d parameter: once you use this parameter, the installation utility remembers the location you specified, so you do not need to specify it again if you run the install utility again later. ----------------------------------------------------------------- A3. Installing a 3D Track Individually - Command Line Mode The names of the original tracks are as follows: austral clevland detroit indy longbch midohio mlwaukee nwenglnd nazareth searspt toronto vancouvr watglen After you have unzipped the Kits install zip file, you may install any individual 3D track by specifying the name of the original as a parameter when running the INSTALL batch file. For example: install midohio This will install only the MIDOHHQ track. Note: If you installed ICR2 in a directory other than \icr2, you must use a /d flag and specify this path on the command line. For example, if you installed ICR2 in \games\icr2, run it this way instead: install /d \games\icr2 midohio ----------------------------------------------------------------- A4.
