Childhood
memories of my big sister Kathi are few but precious. She left
home for college when I was only five years old. I recall her
writing letters to me, her "Sugar Plum". Over the years,
though we were often separated by many miles, she was able to
communicate her love for me, and later for my family, as well.
Kathi's faith was very important to her, but there was a period of time when that was not so. Looking back at that time later in life she spoke of herself as being pursued by the "Hound of Heaven", unable to resist God's Divine claim upon her life.
The
Scriptures tell us that "the mind of man plans his way, but
the LORD directs his steps." It was true of Kathi, and is
true for each of us. We all have faith in something or someone,
whether it be ourselves, fate, the God of the Bible, or some lesser
god. Since no one knows his time, my burden is that we all might
examine our own hearts and ask ourselves where our faith regarding
our future destiny lies. Faith is only as good as its object.
The Lord Jesus Christ boldly affirmed, "I am the Way,
the Truth, and the Life. No man
cometh unto the Father but by me." As we remember my sister
Kathi, let us be deliberate in placing our hope not only for her
but also for ourselves in the hands of the One who alone holds
the future.
