GRE FAQ

I'm running Windows XP and GRE gives me an error: GRE parseTrackIni: Error 52. What do I do?

Download and install GRE 1.0.0. Since XP comes with the VB runtime, you should only need to do the Component Update, not the full install.

Thanks to Lynn Deman for finding and fixing the Parse Track Ini bug!

Why should I upgrade to GRE 0.9.2 or later?

Nate says:

I'd like to encourage everyone who is using GRE v0.9.0 or v 0.9.1 to upgrade to v0.9.2. The reason for this is that the earlier versions had a problem with exporting to text files which could cause people to lose a setup. Here's what happened:

If you were editing "MY SETUP.BB1" and chose the option "Export to text file" and directed it to save the text export as "MY SETUP.CSV", the text export would in fact be saved as "MY SETUP.BB1." Then, when you later tried to open "MY SETUP.BB1," GRE would tell you it's an invalid setup file.

For files affected in this way, the information can be recovered by changing the extension to "CSV" and then using the "Import from Text File" option in GRE to import the setup again.

I'm very sorry for any inconvenience or loss this bug may have caused.

When I try to install GRE, I get an invalid compressed data file error inflating GRE.CAB. What's wrong?

Several readers have encountered this kind of error. One reported:

When trying to install I got the following message:

Dll: C:\PROGRAM\WINZIP\wz32.dll - 09/26/97 06:30
Extracting to "C:\Simracing\GPL\GRE\"
Use Path: yes Overlay Files: no
Extracting GRE.CAB
Error: invalid compressed data to inflate
Extracting setup.exe
Extracting SETUP.LST

Is it something wrong with the file or am i doing something wrong? I am using winzip 6.3.

We don't yet have a solution for this problem. Until we do, please try the Piecemeal Installation method.

Is it possible to get speeds, etc., in metric units? I was trying to change my gearing but mph doesn't mean much to me.

Nate says, "Aaaarghhh! Adding metric units would be a huge pain in the butt."

When I try to run GRE, I get a Run time error '372' Your version of COMDLG32.OCX may be outdated... What's wrong?

I'm trying to install GRE.[using the piecemeal install]. I already had a newer MSCOMCTL.OCX, but installed the other 3 from your zip. Upon trying to start GRE, I get the error message "Run time error '372' Your version of COMDLG32.OCX may be outdated. Make sure you are using the version of the control that was provided...."

In fact, I've inserted that file from the zip several times. I even tried loading your older MSCOMCTL.OCX with no help. Behind the error box I can see the program startup box with HP graphs.

I use WIN98, 2nd edition on my system. Any thoughts?

We asked Steve to turn on GRE debugging, and he replied:

I just solved my own problem :-) It seems I had to "register" the new COMDLG32.OCX file. Something to do with an older version of VB? I went to the Microsoft site and found the following:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q255/1/24.ASP

Check it out, if you like, maybe it'll help someone else. GRE now does open. Thanks for the very large effort that must have gone into it. (thanks to you, too Alison) Regards, Steve R

If you have a similar problem and can't resolve it, follow these instructions from Nate:

Put this line in your GRE.ini:

gLogEnabled,True

If you don't have a GRE.ini, make one and put this line in. Then send me the GRE.log that results when you start GRE. (Nate's email is nateh@sover.net)

You might try the full installer, and see if that works any better.
