GRE is a Visual Basic application. To run it, you need at least the Visual Basic Runtime module, which is available for free from Microsoft.
To install GRE, you can either download the full GRE installer, which will also install the necessary Visual Basic pieces, or you can download GRE and the various other Visual Basic components separately and install them piecemeal.
The piecemeal approach is not as automated as the full installer but will require a smaller total download.
Note: If you have Windows XP, you do not need to use the full install, because Windows XP already has the Visual Basic Runtime. If you have XP, do the piecemeal install.
If you have already installed Visual Basic, GRE, and the GRE OCX files, you may also download and update the individual GRE components separately. This will reduce your download size if you are updating only the GRE executable or GRE Help.

Many thanks to Lynn Deman for finding and fixing the XP-related bug!
Choose this option if you are not running Windows XP and don't already have either GRE or Visual Basic 6.0. This option will allow you to do everything as simply as possible.
Note: Windows XP comes with Visual Basic Runtime, so if you have XP you should choose Option 2: Piecemeal, and start with step 2, or do the Component Update.
1. Download GRE Full v1_0_0.zip (4.3 Mb) and extract the contents into a temporary folder.
2. Run setup.exe. If you are warned that a given file is in use and can't be installed, don't worry about it. Just skip it and proceed with completing the installation.
3. When you open GRE Help, if you get a simple window without the Hide/Show, Back, Print, and Options buttons, it probably means you have an obsolete version of the Windows help module. See below for update instructions.
Choose this option if you are running Windows XP, or if you already have an earlier version of GRE, or you already have Visual Basic 6 installed, or you prefer downloading smaller files.
Note: Windows XP comes with Visual Basic Runtime, so if you have XP you should start with step 2, or do the Component Update.
1. If you are not running Windows XP and don't already have Visual Basic 6.0 installed, download the free Visual Basic 6.0 Runtime, VBRun60sp3.exe (1.0 Mb).
Download the exe to a temporary folder. Run it to install.
Details about this file are here.
2. Download GRE v1_0_0.zip (1.5 Mb) and extract the contents into a new folder, such as c:\Program Files\GRE. These files are required for GRE and must be in the same folder:
GRE.exe GREHelp.chm3. Download GREOCX.zip (700K) and extract the contents to c:\Windows\system. The following files should be included:
MSCOMCTL.OCX COMDLG32.OCX RICHTX32.OCX scrun.dllIf there is an older version of any of these files in Windows\system, you may want to rename the older version first before moving in the newer version included in the GRE zip.
4. When you open GRE Help, if you get a simple window without the Hide/Show, Back, Print, and Options buttons, it probably means you have an obsolete version of the Windows help module. See below for update instructions.
Choose this option if you have already installed an earlier version of GRE, and you have Visual Basic 6 or Windows XP, and you have already installed the files from GREOCX.zip.
If you don't already have Visual Basic 6.0 installed, or if you haven't already installed the files from GREOCX.zip, go to Installation Option 1 or Installation Option 2, above.
1. Download GRE exe v1_0_0.zip (600 Kb) and extract the contents into your GRE folder, typically c:\Program Files\GRE.
2. Download GRE Help v1_0_0.zip (1 Mb) and extract the contents into your GRE folder, typically c:\Program Files\GRE.
These files are required for GRE and must be in the same folder:
GRE.exe GREHelp.chm
When you open GRE Help, if you get a simple window without the Hide/Show, Back, Print, and Options buttons, it probably means you have an obsolete version of the Windows help module.
We suggest you download and install the current version of the Windows help module (700K). The file you need is Hhupd.exe.
