I suggest that you review this entire page before you begin. You may also wish to read the detailed 3D Kit Installation Instructions. Then proceed as follows:
Determine whether your copy of CART or ICR2 is a Rendition Ready version or contains only a DOS or Windows version.
Note that all versions of CART display the Rendition Ready logo shown at right but some versions are not actually Rendition Ready.
If you're not sure if your copy is Rendition Ready, go here.
1. Depending on the version of CART or ICR2 you have, download the following kits and installer:
For Rendition Ready CART or ICR2 For DOS or Windows CART or ICR2 Note that you need to download either the files in the Rendition column or the files in the DOS or Windows column, but not both.
Note: If you have trouble downloading the files in the Rendition column, get them here.
2. Download the following utilities:
1. Place a full install of ICR2 or CART on your hard drive.
Installation Folder
You can install CART or ICR2 anywhere you want, but it will be more convenient later if you install it in C:\ICR2, even though the installer may suggest you install it elsewhere.
It is fine if you install it on a different hard drive, but I recommend you still use the same folder name, e.g. D:\ICR2.
If you're not going to race CART/ICR2 and are only doing this to convert its tracks to GPL, you can delete this folder later.
CART Installation
If you have CART, a Windows installer may Autoplay when you insert the CD. If it does, exit this installer.
The best way to install the Rendition version of CART is to run INSTALL.EXE in the \DOS\REND folder on the CD. Install to a folder called \ICR2 on your hard drive.
If your CART doesn't have a \DOS\REND folder, you will need to use the DOS/Windows versions of the 3D Kits and the 3D Kit Supplement (see above). In this case, you can use the Autoplay installer to install CART.
Go here for more information on the Windows installer that came with the original version of CART.
2. Make sure you have 50 mb free on your hard drive.
3. Ensure you have adequate environment space allocated for DOS programs (at least 1280 is recommended; use more if you get "Out of Environment Space" messages). See the Appendix for how to adjust this.
4. Install WinZip according to the instructions on the WinZip site.
5. Place the pkz204g.zip you downloaded above into a folder in your PATH (C:\ or C:\Windows is usually fine) and unzip it. This should result in pkunzip.exe being placed in that folder.
6. Unzip the trpck10.zip you downloaded above (containing pack.exe and unpack.exe) into your CART or ICR2 folder (e.g. \icr2, \games\icr2, \cart, \rend, etc.)
7. Create a subfolder in your CART or ICR2 directory called 3dkits and place the 3D Kit Installer (3d_setup.zip) and the Track Kits you downloaded above into this folder. Unzip 3d_setup.zip into this folder.
If you are using the DOS or Windows versions of the 3dkits, place the 3D Kit Supplement, 3dsrc.zip, into the 3dkits folder as well.
Your files should now look like this:
- c:\pkunzip.exe
- c:\icr2\
- pack.exe
- unpack.exe
- [and all the other CART/ICR2 files]
- ...
- c:\icr2\3dkits\
- 3d_setup.zip
- 3d_setup.exe
- Clvlndhq.zip
- Dethq.zip
- Lngbchhq.zip
- Midohhq.zip
- Trontohq.zip
- Vanhq.zip
- 3dsrc.zip
Note: You will need 3dsrc.zip (the 3D Kit Supplement) only if you are using the new 3D Kits for the DOS or Windows versions of CART/ICR2.
If you installed ICR2 in any folder other than \icr2, go to Step 1a.
1. From Windows, open a DOS Prompt and type:
c: cd \icr2\3dkits 3d_setup installGo to Step 2.
1a. If you installed ICR2 or CART in a directory other than \icr2, you must use a /d flag and specify this path on the command line.
For example, if you installed ICR2 in \games\icr2, open a DOS Prompt and type:
c: cd \games\icr2\3dkits 3d_setup install /d \games\icr22. Select Option 1 on the Main Menu. The install utility will install all your new 3D tracks.
Now you can convert these tracks to GPL using David Noonan's Track Converter. The Rendition-enhanced tracks will have an "HQ" suffix; use these for the conversion.
Once you have converted the tracks to GPL, you may delete the ICR2 or CART installation and the 3D Kits.
If you have any problems installing the 3D Kits, please read the 3D Kit Installation Instructions! These are also in the readme included in the 3D Kit Installer.
If you still can't resolve your problems, read the ICR2/CART Debugging Tips. Please don't email me until you've read the Debugging Tips and have followed the instructions inside precisely!
