How To Read A Setup
For clarity, I've given telltale suffixes to several of the setups. "NB" indicates no rear bar (in setups where I've given it both ways; with conventional setups with front & rear bars, there is no suffix). In a couple of instances where the Brabham (particularly) is liable to over-rev with the fastest setup, I've indicated "Q" and "R" (for qualifying and race), although in general, these are qualifying setups, with only a few gallons in the tank. You probably want to make several changes to your setup for racing, of which the most obvious is enough fuel to go the distance. In a long race, you probably will also want to reduce the oversteer (if any); it gets real old real fast to have to correct a tail-end slide after every corner. Ditto the ride height (more SRH will avoid nasty surprises when the car bottoms, at the expense of some lateral acceleration). You may want to quicken the steering response to dance out of the way of traffic when neccesary (you can better afford slow, accurate steering when you're alone on the track). I often increase the size of the clutchpack with a full tank. And if the engine has a tendency to blow, you may want to lengthen all the gears, or--on tracks with one long straight, like Kyalami or Mexico--maybe only 5th gear. If you don't drive nearly as hard in the race, you might want a scosh more negative camber to compensate for the lesser chassis roll.

I've included setups for every track in the original game, plus a few for Dave Noonan's remarkable evocation of Brands Hatch, and for the latter-day version of Watkins Glen converted from Papyrus' NASCAR Racing games (courtesy of The Pits). As more tracks become available (Noonan is working on more real-world originals, and conversions of all the old IndyCar Racing/CART Racing circuits except, for some reason, Surfer's in Australia, are in the offing), I'll be posting more setups, at least for the natural terrain road-racing tracks (I'm no fan of street circuits nor of any oval but the Indianapolis Motor Speedway). If you've got a FF wheel, you may want to mess with the front end settings (Alison Hine recommends reverting to classic front toe-*in".) I'll also append tips, hints, and unsubstantiated opinions whenever they occur to me.

And so it goes. Email me (76172.340@compuserve.com) and let me know how these setups work for you, what alterations you feel compelled to make (and why), and whatever ad hominum comments you may have on my mental competency to offer such advice. A twit filter will automatically delete any messages, files, or attachments containing the word "suck".

Thanks.
